You may have more room than you think

How TFSA room works

Room accumulates every January 1 starting the year you turn 18 (minimum 2009). You never lose unused room - it carries forward indefinitely. Withdrawals re-open room, but only on January 1 of the following year. Over-contributing triggers a 1% per month penalty on the excess.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much TFSA contribution room do I have?

Your room depends on when you turned 18 and became a Canadian resident. For 2026, the cumulative limit since 2009 is $102,000 (assuming you were eligible in 2009). Subtract any current TFSA balance and add back any withdrawals from prior years. This calculator walks through it.

What happens if I over-contribute to my TFSA?

The CRA charges a 1% per month penalty on the excess amount. It adds up fast. Always confirm your room before contributing, especially after making withdrawals and re-contributing in the same calendar year.

Can I re-contribute money I withdrew from my TFSA?

Yes, but not until the following January 1. If you withdraw $5,000 in March 2026, that room comes back January 1, 2027. Contributing it back in the same calendar year it was withdrawn counts as an over-contribution.

Is TFSA room the same for everyone?

The annual dollar limit is the same for all eligible Canadians, but your personal room accumulates only from the year you turned 18 (or 2009, whichever is later). Someone who turned 18 in 2015 has less total room than someone who was eligible since 2009.

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?

The 2026 TFSA annual limit is $7,000. If you have never contributed and were eligible since 2009, your total accumulated room is $102,000 in 2026.
