How Canadian Donation Credits Work

Canada uses a two-tier credit system:

  • 14% federal credit on the first $200 of donations
  • 29% federal credit on all donations above $200
  • 33% federal credit (instead of 29%) on donations above $200 if your income exceeds $258,482

Provincial credits stack on top of federal. You must give at least $200 in total to a registered charity to claim the credit, but most givers exceed this quickly.

Unused donation credits can be carried forward up to 5 years, or transferred to a spouse.

Is tithing tax-deductible in Canada?

Yes. If you donate to a registered charity (most churches are), you receive a T3 or T4A tax receipt and can claim the full charitable donation credit. Your church should issue receipts for all eligible donations by February each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tax credit do I get for charitable donations in Canada?

The federal credit is 15% on the first $200 donated per year, and 29% (or your top marginal rate if higher) on amounts above $200. Most provinces add a further credit of roughly 6-17%. Combined, the effective tax savings on larger donations can reach 45-50% depending on your province and income.

What is the super credit for first-time donors?

The First-Time Donor's Super Credit added an extra 25% federal credit on cash donations up to $1,000 for eligible first-time donors. Check whether you qualify before assuming it applies, as the program has had eligibility requirements and duration limits.

Can I carry forward donation tax credits in Canada?

Yes. Unused donation credits can be carried forward up to five years. This means you can save up your receipts and claim them in a year when they produce the largest benefit, such as a year with higher income or when you have crossed the $200 threshold.

What charitable donations qualify for the tax credit?

Donations to registered Canadian charities (those with a CRA registration number) qualify. Gifts to your church, registered non-profits, and recognized charitable organizations all count. Keep your official receipts; you will need them to claim the credit.

Is my tithe considered a charitable donation for tax purposes?

If your church is a registered charity (which virtually all Canadian churches are), yes. Your monthly giving receipts add up to a donation claim each year. Many people underestimate this. Check your annual giving statement and ensure you claim the full amount on your return.
