Canada wrote God into Thanksgiving
“All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied.”
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, Henry Alford, 1844
From Dan's Desk
Thanksgiving is Monday. Sometime that afternoon you will bow your head over a full plate, and if your table is anything like most, somebody will say thank you without ever saying to whom.
Canada answered that question in writing. The 1957 proclamation that fixed the holiday calls it a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest. We kept the harvest and, a generation at a time, dropped the Giver.
This week's lead essay is about getting the address back. It is written for the man who says grace and means it the way you mean a password, while running the math underneath: the line of credit, the grocery total that keeps climbing.

Canadian Thanksgiving and Money: A Christian Reflection on Gratitude and Enough
Moses saved his sternest warning for the years when everything goes well: when you have eaten and are full, take care lest you forget. This is about what a biweekly direct deposit does to a man's memory of where provision comes from, and it ends with a one-page exercise built for this exact week. Write down what you were given this year, by name and by number, then keep the page for January.
7 Things Financially Faithful Men Do Differently
New on the site this week. A man can know plenty about money and still lie awake over it, and this guide is about closing that gap. These are the seven habits I keep seeing in men who are at peace with their money. None of them requires a raise, and most cost under an hour a month.

[Article] Gratitude Is Hard to Do
Joseph Rhea, The Gospel Coalition
Read
Rhea's diagnosis is that gratitude only grows where a man makes much of the good already on his shelf, and that our whole economy works full time against that. Short enough to read before Monday, and the sharpest companion to this week's lead I found.

In September, writer Derek Thompson shared survey data showing the share of adults who regularly have friends over has collapsed roughly 70 percent since 1975. This piece takes that number and argues for scruffy hospitality: a frozen lasagna and an open door, whatever gets people in the room. If your table has an empty chair on Monday, somebody you know is hoping you notice.

The Bank of Canada held at 2.25 percent in September for a seventh straight decision, and October 28 is the live one: with inflation sitting at 3 percent, markets have priced the odds of a hike near a coin flip, and the September CPI release on October 19 will probably settle it. If your mortgage renews in the next year, find out now what a quarter point does to your payment.

How far donations to religious organizations in Canada have fallen against 2018, about $1.4 billion a year, in Statistics Canada's most recent national giving study (data to 2023, released June 2025). Over the same stretch, the share of Canadians participating in religious activities went from 45 percent to 37, and 96 percent of the giving that remains comes from the people still participating. The giving that holds up Canada's churches now rests on fewer hands, which makes yours matter more than it ever has.
Worth running: the Charitable Giving Calculator, to put a real number, with the donation tax credit counted, on what you plan to give this year.

Good News About the Good News
Britain is the country people point to when they want to say the church is dying. On September 4 the Evangelical Alliance published the largest study of UK evangelicals in a generation, a Whitestone Insight survey of 8,407 adults. It counts about 2.6 million classic evangelicals (people who hold historic Protestant beliefs and claim the name) and more than 12 million Britons who hold evangelical beliefs, identify as evangelical, or both.
While religious affiliation in general declines there, the believing core is holding, and it skews young. Evangelicals in the UK are more ethnically diverse than the wider population and more likely to be male, and adults under 35 are the age group most likely to identify.

Coming Next Week
The Biblical Manhood Tip returns next Thursday, its first run since August. One practice, one passage, small enough to start the same day you read it.
The Close
Monday, somebody at your table will say grace. Let it be you. And before the weekend gets loud, take the ten minutes the essay asks for: one page, what you were given this year, by name and by number. A grace with real things in it lands differently, most of all on the man praying it.
The very breath in our lungs each morning is from God's grace. Far more than we deserve.
Grace and peace,
Dan
P.S. Know a man who is sure the church in the West is finished? Send him this one for the British numbers.
Which move are you on? The Steward's Map lays out all eight. This week's lead lands where the Map starts, move 1, Give First: the essay's last assignment is to let one act of giving leave the page before the holiday. Just hit reply and tell me the number. I read every one.
