The Bible mentions retirement once
“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12
From Dan's Desk
Fifty-five. If you grew up on Canadian television, you can finish that sentence without trying: the couple on the dock, the tanned man with silver hair who got out early. Freedom 55 sold a finish line to a whole generation of Canadian men, and some version of it is still parked in most of our heads.
This week's lead essay goes looking for that finish line in Scripture. The word appears once, in a passage almost nobody preaches, and what it describes rearranged what I think my RRSP is for.
The second piece takes the same question from the other side: how much should a Christian actually give? I have heard that one many times, asked plainly and buried inside the gross-or-net math, and the percentage is usually standing in for something harder. Both pieces are circling one question: what is the money actually for?
From Wise and Faithful
Is Retirement a Biblical Concept?
The only retirement passage in Scripture is in Numbers 8, and the man it describes lays down the heavy lifting and stays at the tent. From there: the rich fool, who is the one man in the Bible who achieves the retirement our culture sells, and what your RRSP contributions are actually for. I wrote it with my own numbers on the table, since whatever retirement income a pastor gets is the kind he sets aside on purpose.
How Much Should Christians Give?
"Am I supposed to give ten percent? Because I don't think I'm doing that." If some version of that question has been sitting in your chest, this is the full answer: what the tithe is actually good for, why Paul never names a percentage, the Canadian donation tax credit many men leave unclaimed, and a five-step way to land on your own number.

[News] Bank of Canada Holds Interest Rate at 2.25%
MoneySense, September 2, 2026
Read
Seventh consecutive decision at 2.25%, though the Bank says the risks to inflation now lean upward. For a household, a boring rate announcement is a gift: the math on your mortgage or renewal holds still long enough to plan around. If your term comes up within the year, run your numbers while nothing is moving.
[Podcast] Remembering the "Seashells" Sermon, 23 Years Later
Crossway, with John Piper
Listen
In 2000, Piper told a stadium of students about a couple who retired early to Punta Gorda, Florida to cruise on their trawler and collect shells, and asked what kind of final report that makes: "I collected shells. See my shells." The sermon has been arguing with the retirement dream ever since. This conversation revisits it with two decades of hindsight, and it pairs squarely with this week's lead.
[Essay] Fathers Are Unique and Irreplaceable

Britton pushes back on the picture of a family as two interchangeable adults dividing tasks on a spreadsheet. The research she gathers says children with engaged fathers show stronger self-control and fewer behaviour problems. You bring something to your kids that arrives through you alone.
The Week in One Number
41%
That is the share of Canadians who believe they will have enough saved to support the lifestyle they want in retirement, from BMO's retirement survey released back in February. In the same survey, 42% named financial pressure as the biggest barrier to saving anything at all.
Before you chase the number, finish the sentence underneath it: saved, so that I can do what? The lead essay above is about that blank.
Worth running: the Compound Interest Calculator, to see what your current monthly contribution actually builds by sixty-five.

Scripture for Your Wallet
"Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, 'Who is the LORD?'"
Proverbs 30:8 and 9
This is Agur, one page from the end of Proverbs, praying about his income. He has watched what a full table does to a man's memory, and he has watched what an empty one does to a man's integrity. So he asks God to set his provision in the middle: enough to eat, and little enough to keep him praying. It may be the only prayer in the Bible that treats a raise as a spiritual risk.
Live it this week: once, before you open your banking app, pray Agur's line in your own words. Lord, give me what I need, and keep me remembering you at a full table.
Good News About the Good News
As of September 1, Wycliffe Bible Translators counts 807 languages with a complete Bible and 1,844 more with the New Testament. Translation work is underway in 4,414 languages, and on average a new project starts every day.
Every few days, somewhere in the world, a community receives a New Testament or a whole Bible in the language it prays in. About one person in five is still waiting, so the work is far from done. Paul wrote that faith comes from hearing the word of Christ, and more of the world can hear it this year than ever before.

Coming Next Week
Thanksgiving is October 12, and next Thursday's issue is built for it: the reason Canada's 1957 proclamation names Almighty God, what happens in a man saying grace over a full plate, and a one-page exercise to bring to the table. It lands four days before the turkey, which is about when you will want it.
The Close
One sentence to finish this week, then: I am saving so that by sixty-five I can ___. Push on the second blank until somebody besides you appears in it, then read it to your wife, because it is her sentence too.
And if the amount question has followed you around for years, gross or net, ten percent or some other number, the second piece will meet you kindly and still put the real question to you: are you trying to reason your way out of giving to God?
Whichever end you are standing at, our wealth is in the cross, and that inheritance has no drawdown schedule.
Grace and peace,
Dan
P.S. Every man knows a man who quotes Freedom 55 like a Bible verse. Forward this to him. Gently.
