Run the Numbers, Then Rest
“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”
Psalm 127:2
From Dan's Desk
I once caught myself in the shower working out how I would calculate what each minute of hot water was costing me. The water was hot. The math would have been accurate. And none of it would have made anything better.
This week's lead essay is the most personal one I have published in a while. It is for the man who has done everything the books said, who budgets carefully and can quote the MER on every fund he owns, and who is quietly miserable anyway, because the ledger in his head never closes.
Then, for anyone saving toward a first home: the FHSA, explained properly. If your down payment money is sitting in a bank account named House Fund, the second piece could be worth real dollars to you.

Optimization Is Stealing Your Joy
Every purchase gets a full trial. Old decisions get re-litigated on quiet drives. Even the wins get audited. This essay names what is happening when the spreadsheet stops giving you peace, and it ends in the parable of the talents, at a detail I had never noticed until this year.
The FHSA Explained: Canada's Best Account for First-Time Home Buyers
An RRSP deduction going in, a TFSA withdrawal coming out. $8,000 a year of room up to a $40,000 lifetime maximum, and if you never buy, the balance rolls into your RRSP without touching a dollar of contribution room. Most of the men saving for a first home have never opened one.
This Week's Tool
Reading about the account is one thing. Seeing your own timeline is another. Enter your income and your target down payment to see the tax refund each contribution generates and how quickly the room fills up.

The new benefit year bumped the CCB about 2% for inflation: up to $8,157 per child under six and $6,883 for ages 6 to 17, all of it tax-free. If you have kids, five minutes to confirm what your family receives, and to give that money a named job in the budget, is time well spent.

A panel including Bob Doll, a Wall Street veteran and a serious believer, on carrying Christ's character into the marketplace, from work ethic to how you treat the people you do business with. Good commute listening, and an honest companion to this week's lead essay.

Adult conversions are surging across France, Britain, and the United States, and young men are leading the way. France baptized more than 13,200 adults this Easter, up 27% in a year, with roughly 42% of them aged 18 to 25. Read it before you accept the story that the West is done with God.
The Week in One Number
3.0%
Canada's inflation rate for July, up from 2.8% in June and sitting at the very top of the Bank of Canada's control range. A jump at the pump and pricier travel tours did most of the pushing, and food from stores still rose 3.1% year over year. A budget you priced in January is a January budget. Re-run the grocery and gas lines once, adjust, and let it rest.

Good News About the Good News
Every one of the ten most engaged days in YouVersion's 17-year history has happened in 2026. Easter Sunday set the high mark: 21.6 million people opened Scripture through the Bible App in a single day. Back on January 5 the app logged 798,000 installs in one day, its largest ever, with 18.2 million people engaging the Bible that same day.
More people are reading Scripture through the app right now than at any point in its history, and the app only measures what it can see. God's Word is moving.

Coming Next Week
Two pieces are queued: one for the man who treats not caring about money as a virtue (it usually costs his family something), and a three-option framework for joint versus separate accounts in marriage. The Biblical Manhood Tip returns next issue as well. See you Thursday.
The Close
Psalm 127 says God gives sleep to those he loves. Anxious toil promises control and delivers exhaustion. Sleep is what a man can do when he trusts the One keeping watch.
Run your numbers. Make your plan. Then close the tab and go to bed.
Grace and peace,
Dan
P.S. Most men I know can name the friend whose ledger never closes. If a name came to mind while you read the lead essay, forward this issue his way. The essay will do the talking.
